This site shows the performative and dance related creations by Varinia Canto Vila. It does not show the works where VCV participated as a dancer.

As a maker, my focus has been mainly understanding the moving body as an art medium. I’ve been interested in seeing the body as being part of an ever changing process, where ephemerality and becoming set up the time frame parameters for perception and experience to take place. I’ve been framing this research in rather abstract languages to give way to a multiplicity of reading. What interests me is to bring the audience to a state of wondering and where the experience of watching is not connected to verbal understanding or de-codification, but to an experience in and of itself.

Lately, my interests have changed and I’ve been starting to develop work that tries to understand the moving body in social and political contexts (outside the dance studio). This shift is mainly present in the kinds of materials I am choosing. If my studio or theater work the materials are mainly the moving body on stage, here it is the social moving body. The social moving body is one that is not giving itself to observation as the precondition for its existence. The social moving body is the one who is inserted in life itself, where behaviors and actions correspond to the vital need of life, and not only to the construction of an aesthetic object. In this way, my works have focused mainly on the notion of extended choreography, where the notion of choreography as an organization has served me as a tool for representing the social and political body. This work has crystallized in research projects that have been reflected in experiences in public spaces as well as in works in performance spaces.
